EIT Food 2nd edition

The second edition of the EIT Food Innovation Award is already on the air, aimed at entrepreneurs who have an idea to transform the agri-food area.

EIT Food’s mission is to innovate in the European food sector with the aim of improving people’s quality of life and reducing the environmental impact of this sector. Thus, the Innovation Award offers monetary prizes to entrepreneurs from all over the country who have an idea that will respond to this challenge.

The Innovation Award supports the commercialization of products, services and business models that improve the system of production, transformation and transportation of food.

The EIT Food looks for startups and ideas that improve the agri-food system in the following areas:
• population health
• environment
• transparency

Companies can submit applications by May 12 and the 10 finalists will be invited to attend EIT Food Portugal DemoDay, which will take place on July 17 and 18 at BGI. This event will bring together investors, startups, companies and relevant entrepreneurs in this area, being a networking event open to the public. The 10 finalists will have the opportunity to receive training and present their pitch idea in 3 minutes to a relevant jury who will choose the two winning projects.

The two startups with the best evaluation in their presentation and application will be awarded the 1st prize of € 10,000 and the 2nd prize of € 5,000.

In 2018, startup Sponsh won the first Innovation award, being one of the success stories of this program. Sponsh has developed a textile layer that, when placed around the trees, works like a sponge attracting water and rain moisture. This product becomes essential to prevent the cutting down of trees and ensure that water reaches drought-affected sites.

Lourens Boot, founder of Sponsh, now testifies about the Innovation Award and its experience: “It has been an experience with EIT Food and we were very excited to have won the prize. This year we made our minimal viable textile product and now we will use it to make a real-life prototype that can actually create water around the trees. ” You can see last year’s edition here:
