Portugal Ventures launches new Venture Capital Fund

Portugal Ventures, a public venture capital company, launches the Portugal Global Ventures II Venture Capital Fund (FCR PV GVII) with € 10m to invest in Portuguese technology-based startups in the digital, hardware and life sciences areas.

The launch of this Fund will allow Portugal Ventures to continue its investment activity in companies with less than 3 years of activity, that is, at a high risk stage, but also with a high potential for innovation and business development. In the last 5 years Portugal Ventures has invested over € 260m in 116 companies.

This Fund is financed through the Capital Development and Quasi-Capital Fund (FC & QC) of the Development Finance Institution (DFI) and a capital injection of Portugal Ventures. It should be noted that this Fund is the first injection of new capital into the perimeter of Portugal Ventures since its creation in 2012.

For Celso Guedes de Carvalho, CEO of Portugal Ventures, “This new investment vehicle will allow us to continue investing in entrepreneurs who want to solve problems with business models and disruptive technologies. Our ambition is to work hand in hand with these entrepreneurs, creating global market leaders. “

According to Ana Teresa Lehmann, Secretary of State for Industry: “Access to financing is essential if the national startup ecosystem is to grow, innovate, scale and internationalize. The launch of this Venture Capital Fund is a very relevant instrument for the densification of our ecosystem, boosting the growth of companies. “

For Alberto Castro, Chairman of the Development Finance Institution, “Portugal has been affirming itself as a crucible of entrepreneurship experiences. In order for the high expectations created not to be frustrated, it is important to have specialized financing such as that proposed by Portugal Ventures. On behalf of the IFD, we reiterate our commitment to be partners in this endeavor by continuing to develop the necessary financial instruments to meet these expectations. “
